"This is my backpack. And I suppose you have yours, too."

In this scene marked by the movement of walking, various fragments of a face are wrapped in the plastic of a bag that represents the everyday act of running weekly errands. Just like buying too much at the supermarket, at the beginning of the walk back home, the weight of the bag doesn't physically affect us, but little by little, it starts to hurt the skin of our fingers and strain our back.

Gallego aims to convey precisely this feeling of wear and tear in this oil painting, titled "My Backpack." In this way, the artist alludes to our personal baggage, which shapes us as individuals from a certain age, and of which we become aware only when it is too late for its weight not to affect us.

Thus, identity is presented as a constant weight that must be carried.

How it's made

/Celia Gallego employs the traditional technique of oil on canvas in all her works. This method involves mixing pigments with an oil-based binder that allows the pigments to adhere to the canvas. By playing with layers, brightness, and transparency, the artist succeeds in creating her unmistakable portraits of fragmented faces.
